Camilo y los Cruzers is a project born from the mission to explore the rich intersections of Latin and Black music. Led by Grammy-nominated guitarist Camilo Landau, the project invites an all-star collective of musicians from distinct communities to collaborate in an open, improvisational setting. The name invokes cruzando fronteras — crossing borders — and cruising through historic moments of cultural mixing, from Chicano Soul to modern-day psychedelia.
“Descarga Rockeada” is exactly what the name says: a descarga, the Cuban version of a jam session, but rocked out. It’s part of the Sala Sessions, a series recorded live in Camilo’s living room in Alameda, California. The concept is simple: invite friends over, cook some food, set up microphones in the sala, hit record, and go for it. Just musicians connecting in musical conversation.
The lineup on this track is a dream rhythm section. Karl Perazzo, best known as Santana’s longtime percussionist, anchors the groove on congas. Darian Gray holds it down on drums while Jeremiah Haynes plays Farfisa organ and synth bass, filling out the harmonic landscape with vintage texture and psychedelic soul. Camilo drives the session on electric guitar, steering the improvisational arc from simmering tension into full-blown eruption.
The inspiration behind the track is the descarga itself — the idea that when you put musicians with deep roots in different traditions in the same room and let them play with a wide-open format, something new can emerge. “Descarga Rockeada” channels that spirit of collaboration and sharing: it’s the sound of Black and Latin musical traditions colliding in a living room over a home-cooked meal, each player bringing their own voice to a conversation with no predetermined outcome.
The result is kinetic and unpredictable, a journey that moves from a hypnotic conga-and-organ grooves into raw guitar freakout, all held together by the trust between musicians who’ve known each other and played together in different formats for years. It’s live music in the purest sense: no safety net, no second takes, just the moment.
